Renewable Energy for the Jepson Science Center Addition

In the year 2017, the implementation of renewable energy is an issue at the forefront of modern sustainability practices. As a school that prides ourselves on our innovative forward thinking, it would behoove the University of Mary Washington to implement a plan for renewable energy to be utilized in the new addition to the Jepson Science Center. To set a precedent, as well as act as an example of the future of energy technology, the university would greatly benefit from the installation of such features as solar panels and/or wind turbines on the
new building, as well as electric car chargers in the proposed parking lot. Young creative minds will be attracted to a school that is looking ahead when it comes to energy practices and a highly visible renewable energy system will show the community and other higher learning institutions that renewable is a feasible and worthwhile investment. The university, as per its mission statement, prides itself on “providing a superior education that inspires and enables our students to make positive changes in the world.” What better way to inspire future change than by making positive changes as a community today? I have written a proposal for the installation of renewable energy as an important energy source for the new building addition, a ground-level display explaining the system and its benefits, and electric car charging stations in the parking area.
