Donegal Field Trip Rules & Procedures

We, the parents of Donegal School District students, are petitioning to change the school district's rule regarding field trips. We ask that the practices that have been in place in the past be reinstated and that the official rules and procedures be changed so that
1. Each grade is allowed to go on more than 1 field trip as long as funding is available and the field trip correlates to what the students are studying in that grade. This particularly impacts 4th grade because in the past they have always done 2 field trips - an agricultural trip to a farm and a field trip to the State Museum and State Capitol in Harrisburg.
The first field trip is part of the statewide Ag curriculum that the PA Department of Agriculture and PA Department of Education have developed for 4th grade. Because we live in a rural district, we are blessed with local farmers and agribusinesses that have graciously underwritten the entire cost of the entire field trip that ties directly in with the agricultural curriculum for 4th grade.
For the second field trip to the State Capitol, the 4th graders spend almost the entire year in Social Studies learning the states and capitals, choosing and researching a state which they then present in a PowerPoint presentation and learning about our home state of Pennsylvania. The visit to the State Capitol is the perfect way to end the year.
2. We also ask that the rule that the entire grade must go on a field trip on the same day be changed so that the grade can go on multiple days. Requiring the entire grade to go on the same day drastically limits the options for field trips. There are many places that cannot accommodate 250-275 students at a time. For example, for the past many years the third grade has gone to Nixon Park in York County and done a stream study to evaluate the health of the Codorus Creek, observed animals in their natural habitat and viewed the many taxidermied animals in the visitor's center. The park can only accommodate about 150 students at a time so the third grade can no longer go on this field trip.
I am planning to present this petition and the signatures at the upcoming school board meeting at 7 pm on Thursday November 9th in the Large Group Room at DPS. Please consider signing the petition and attending the board meeting so that the school board and administration are aware of our concerns. Thank you.
