Justice for Brutalised Wits Students

We, the students, parents, friends and supporters of justice, refuse to stand by and watch armed men brutalise fellow human beings. Whether we agree with the protests or not, we are united in condemning to the highest degree the use of violence inflicted by armed guards on Wits Education students. The protests have been largely peaceful and the rare incidents of violence in no way condone the use of force demonstrated by the guards. Students and lecturers have been beaten using batons, kicked, chocked, pushed, pepper-sprayed and dragged.
We demand that the Head of School, Karin Brodie, be accountable for her role in this abuse of power.
BACKGROUND ABOUT THE PROTESTS:
On the 4th of May students at Wits Education Campus started protesting after security threatened to remove students who were selling food on campus. Once the students gathered they realised that there was more at stake than access to affordable food and soon a memorandum, which raised issues around funding, accommodation and teaching experience emerged. Led by the ESC and supporters, the students started chanting and marching around campus. For several days the students were met by violent, aggressive and armed men who assaulted and 'arrested' students. One student was almost arrested for merely attempting to take video footage of the abuse. However, students remained united and continued to fight for an appropriate response from management to their demands.
