Sophomore students are required to take a semester of health education in order to graduate in district 204. This course covers many important topics like nutrition, mental health, and sexual health. It does not, however do an adequate job of addressing choices that are important for the LGBTQ+ community.
We propose that the district includes a unit about gender and sexuality. This issue is an important aspect of mental and sexual health. By teaching students about the proper vocabulary and pronouns that surround the LGBTQ+ community, as well as discussing safe sex practices, hormone therapy, sex reassignment, and other health procedures important in the LGBTQ+ community, we hope to create a deeper understanding and open-mindedness in students.
