Highgrove is a little slice of paradise with more than a century of storied history. Some residents have lived here for generations and can tell you stories of wandering its hilly groves and lighting smudge pots to warm the oranges during a winter freeze. Others were drawn here more recently to planned communities like Spring Mountain Ranch by the allure of wild donkeys and the emerald hills of Sugar Loaf, with dreams of raising our growing families in this perfect, quiet place.

That way of life has never been more threatened. At the Highgrove Municipal Advisory Meeting on March 31, the public was informed that four cannabis dispensaries have already been approved for Highgrove and a fifth dispensary is being considered. How many cannabis stores does a town of 3.2 square miles and 7,200 people need? At least nine dispensary applications have already been submitted for Highgrove and can be approved at the discretion of Supervisor Karen Spiegel. Special county amendments have also been enacted so the dispensaries can be less than 1,000 feet apart.

A 7-Eleven is also in the planning stages to be located at the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Center Street. The proposed 24-hour liquor store and all five cannabis dispensaries are within walking distance of Highgrove Elementary School and the new school planned for Spring Street. The liquor store will also be directly across the street from a county park still in its planning stages located between Center, Spring and Mt. Vernon streets.

We, the undersigned residents of Highgrove, voice our strong and LOUD opposition to the proposed cannabis stores and liquor store. We are a growing community in need of a grocery store, coffee shops and other family-oriented businesses. Supervisor Karen Spiegel was elected to be a champion and advocate for Highgrove, not someone who prioritizes tax revenue over the safety and wellbeing of our families.

Protect our children, our values and our way of life. Just say no to the cannabis and liquor stores!
