MY FATHER

My Father Isael Sanchez-Mercedes, is serving 287 month sentese as a drug offender. My father was born in Dominican Republic, he is the smallest of  five children. He grew up surrounded by a close knit and religious family. My father became a citizen of the unites states on 1995. My father has 4 children, that’s including myself . My youngest brother lives in Dominican Republic, with his mother who is a teacher, he is taken care of mostly by my grandmother (my fathers mother). My older brother ( Israel Sanchez) , younger sister (Izzy Sanchez) and myself (Karen Sanchez) all were born and raised in the U.S.A. All three of us also served and currently serving in the military. My older brother is currently a sergeant in the Army National Guard, also works fulltime for the Army National Guard, 145 SMC, staten Island NY. My younger sister Izzy Sanchez is currently enlisted in the NAVY. As for myself, before being honorably discharged August 2015, I had served six years in the Army National Guard, also as Sergeant Sanchez. My father has always been in our lives and in communication with us, always found a way to be a father figure and a part of our lives. Throughout my bootcamp training I remember being physically and mentally drained, my father made it his business to send me a letter every chance he had, with nothing but words of support and encouragement, he is the reason I never gave up, and never have. He is why I became Sergeant Sanchez. My father has always played an important roll in our lives, because of my father I have beautiful childhood memories growing up among family and plenty of love. I wish to be able to create new memories with my children and let them enjoy their grandfather as much as I have. The best father in this world and my hero.

Conviction

My father was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and of possession of five kilograms or more of cocaine. NO ASPECT OF HIS OFFENSE WAS VIOLENT. My father is a Low-Level offender. My father never had and has no ties to any type of criminal Organizations.

My father has served OVER 10 years of his sentence. My father has been incarcerated since his arrest on February 07 2006. According to the Bureau of prisons Records my father has served 11 years and 30 days as of March 07 2017. As of May 12 2016 my father has received 486 days of Good Time Credit. My father has no criminal history, no violent history prior or during imprisonment. He has demonstrated good conduct in prison.

On June 05 2007, the United States District Court for the Eastern Distric of Pennsylvania sentenced my father Isael Sanchez- Mercedes to 360 months (30 years) imprisonment. The court reduced the sentence to 287 months on april 06 2016. If my father would’ve been sentenced today, he would’ve received a lower sentence. The supreme court has held, that a court must “impose a sentence sufficient, but not greater than necessary to accomplish the goal of sentencing” The goal of the court , could’ve well have been achieved  by the statutory minimum of Ten years for a First time and none- violent offender, self-employed educated , family man like my father. The original 30 years sentence and the current almost 24 years sentence appears to be greater then necessary to accomplish the goal of sentencing.

Also, before my fathers sentence, there were many things to take into consideration, which I feel were not. The sentencing commission data on recidivism shows that there are certain offender characteristics that present a LOWER risk of recidivism. Thos characteristics includes offenders over the age of 40 (at the time of sentencing my father was 49 years old) offenders with some education (at the time of sentencing my father had college education) offenders who have been employed (at the time of sentencing my father was self- employed and had operated a refrigerator and air conditioner/ heating repair company for many years) The characteristics also include those offenders who have been married and  zero criminal history point, this ALL applies to my father Isael Sanchez-Mercedes.

Accomplishments

My father has accomplished  a great deal during his incarceration. He has always been a healthy and smart man. Growing up I remember he always encouraged eating healthy and he was always working out. In the prison, my father has completed educational courses, obtained numerous of certificates. Also scored high test scores. Even incarcerated my father continues to be an amazing roll model and example.

Should’ve received a lower sentence…he might owe the community, but not his life to the community.
