A recent motion has been put forth in order to switch the band and strings classrooms. However, instead of solving any problems, this presents a multitude of new issues that have been overlooked.

  1. The strings orchestra is unable to play in the current band setup. Making this room playable for a string orchestra would cost at least $250,000 based on current estimates.
  2. The strings room has less access to the football field than the current band room, which would require excess burden and responsibility upon the marching band and color guard.
  3. Storage in the band room is limited and would be unable to fit the strings instruments without renovation, thus adding extra cost to the school budget.
  4. Construction upon these two rooms would render them unusable for a band or a string orchestra. These are two highly populated classes, and a large portion of the student body would not be able to participate in the furthering of their education.
  5. Converting the current strings room into a band room would require extensive soundproofing. The cost of this is unknown as of now, but to make the environment conducive to learning within the middle school, there would be a large cost upon the school.

As students of Highlands High School, we appreciate the opportunities that have been provided to us thus far in order to expand our education. This has given us the ability to succeed and become worldly citizens, granting us the ability to fulfill this school's promises. Yet, this change would revoke many of these opportunities. We believe that this is a problem that must be addressed, and we agree that the band needs more space to grow and develop their program. However, we also believe in the support of this community of staff and students alike to provide a solution that is actually a solution, instead of simply a replacement of one issue with another.
