Scarborough should NOT have a massive skyscraper on its beachfront with a height and bulk that is excessive for the site and unsuitable for the surrounds. As local residents, we welcome redevelopment of the area but believe that the proposed high-rise is TOO BIG, TOO BULKY and TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE for its proposed location and that the current design needs to be reconsidered.
The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority rejected the proposal by a Chinese developer for a super-sized 43-storey twin tower complex after months of considered and detailed deliberation by a body of development and design experts. Their '"NO" decision was based not on emotion but on facts and sound reasoning.
The call to ignore this advice and to 'develop at any price' completely disregards the MRDA's recommendations. It also opens Pandora's Box and has the potential to turn the entire WA coastline into a Gold Coast clone.
Developers of the Scarborough project must not be allowed to ignore design guidelines, potential traffic and safety problems, pedestrian access, suitable infrastructure, parking problems, over-crowding and suitability of the structure with the surrounding environment or to disregard hundreds of community submissions. Nor should they be allowed to construct an unsuitable over-sized building simply because it delivers the best financial return.
We call on relevant ministers, Government departments, planners, architects, councils and residents of Scarborough and ALL beach suburbs to continue with suitable beachfront redevelopment, but to support the sound and sensible decision of the MRDA in rejecting the proposed Scarborough project in its current form.
Please sign this petition and join us in demanding that a more appropriate, empathetic, less invasive, more community-friendly and more suitable structure that complies with the MRDA's recommendations be designed and adopted for WA's most iconic beachfront.
