Kanyadaan is socially regressive ritual performed at Hindu marriage cermony. it propotiates Gift of a Maiden, by father to husband. It implies maiden girls are to be traded off at wedding for gaining Punya for father by Donating his maiden daughter. It fosters the mindset that girls are liabilities to be donated to husbands family. No honuorable man takes back the Daan once it is done. The husband & inlaws take undue advantage of the Guilt of fathers (of dishounouring a daan/ donation deed) with threats of Abandonment, women are put in a forced situation where they are not welcome at fathers home and husband threatens to throw out. In order to change Societal mindset, irrespective of DV Act 2005 being in force, this ritualistic practice of KanyaDaan needs to be banned. This ritual demeans and compromises women's dignity, humanness, self-esteem, self-respect. This ritual fosters a mindset among males to view women as Thing, as Property to be donated or to be used or to be in possession of as master.
