Introduce Weapon Amnesty Bins in Brent to Reduce Knife Crime
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!
Brent is one of the worst affected boroughs in London by knife crime. Over 100 people have been stabbed to death in the borough of Brent. More than 70 people under the age of 24 were stabbed in Brent in 2015 alone. Thousands of lives have been torn to pieces by the loss of a loved one at the hands of such violence.
Weapon amnesty bins are secure bins where people can surrender and dispose of their knives and other weapons. They are placed away from CCTV and in discrete locations so that anyone can anonymously give up their weapons. Amnesty bins significantly reduce knife crime in areas where they are placed, as those carrying knives and other weapons can easily get rid of them, which in turn prevents knife-related violence. We as a community are in desperate need of this in Brent.
How would you feel as a parent getting a phone call from the police telling you your child has been stabbed outside his school? Every day, young people in Brent live in fear of being stabbed to death by gangs and thugs. It is time we take a stand and fight back against the blade.
Over 28,000 weapons have been collected so far from only 30 amnesty bins in London, yet none of these are placed in Brent. In Suffolk, the introduction of knife amnesty bins had an immense impact of reducing the number of stabbings by 37% over the course of a year.
