Friends of Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve started this petition to Kamala Harris and

The Honduran Moskitia is one of the largest remaining forests in the Americas and is important for indigenous culture and wildlife. Yet it is rapidly being destroyed by wealthy cattle ranchers, often with alleged ties to drug traffickers, who colonize indigenous lands for their own benefit. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the illegal road was built into the heart of the region allegedly with drug money to facilitate trafficking and money laundering through illegal cattle operations. The road was built without an environmental impact study or consultation with indigenous governments.

The illegal Narco-Road and the organized crime it will surely promote, could be the death knell of the indigenous lands of the Moskitia and Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve. This would be devastating for the wildlife of the region, devastating for Honduras' ability to fight against climate change, and devastating for Indigenous livelihoods.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been tied to drug trafficking through high-profile legal cases in the United States, and in recent weeks his government has been widely accused of severe negligence that has permitted massive destruction in the Honduran Moskitia. We must pressure them to act.

We need your help: please sign this petition, share widely with your friends and colleagues, and communicate with your government officials directly to help save this important forest.
