Save NASA's Office of Education

The president has recently proposed a budget that threatens to eliminate the NASA Office of Education, which provides valuable resources and opportunities to many people, including the next generation of space explorers. Below is a list of things that make the prospect of its elimination something we should all be concerned about:
- A team of K-12 education specialists take the science and engineering happening across NASA and turn it into lessons that teachers and parents can use to teach and inspire students. Most of the lessons are created from scratch and all are aligned to educational standards. (If you're a teacher, you know how valuable that is.)
- That same team works directly with teachers, student-teachers and schools (often in underserved communities) to provide resources and materials and help educators develop their skills, curriculums and programs.
- NASA's higher-education team brings in hundreds of college students each year for internships at various NASA centers, and provides many students with scholarships as well. These experiences mold students into the engineers and scientists who land rovers on Mars and make new discoveries about our very own Earth. Without these experiences and the guidance the education team, many students would not have had the opportunity to make their career goals a reality in today's competitive workforce.
- NASA's informal education team provides resources, materials and training to museums, planetariums, libraries, after-school groups, camps – and all the other places you may have come across NASA or learned about cool science and space missions in the "real world." The department also runs a summer seminar in which students plan a space mission, which encourages creativity.
-The education office promotes diversity and encourages support for minorities within STEM fields.
But that's just scratching the surface ... If you want to find out more, visit the following websites: https://www.nasa.gov/offices/education/about/index.html http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu. Exploration is the essence of the human spirit; without NASA's Office of Education, encouraging the next generation of pioneers and increasing environmental awareness would be a much more difficult task. Lets take a step forward instead of taking a step back!
If you think these things sound even halfway important, please help preserve NASA's Office of Education by signing this petition and reaching out to your representatives. Spread the word!
