Petition to Change Current Gun Control Policy

Yesterday, February 14th, marked yet another mass shooting, the 18th at a school in less than two months of this new year. We must do better. We cannot let special interests like the NRA continue to let their greed burgeon at the expense of the lives of innocent children. No parent should send their child to school and never see them come back home. I am a Student Affairs professional, and the amount of time we spend on active shooter training is simply a band-aid to the overarching problem regarding a lack of gun policy regulations. I will not succumb to the pessimistic outlook that these situations are inevitable. I have a responsibility to my students to do better.
When tragedies such as yesterday happen, there are no words that I can use to console my students because the reality is that there is nothing being done to prevent horrible massacres such as these from happening again. We are doing a disservice to our country and learning institutions by continuously disengaging in these critical conversations. As elected public officials, you have an insurmountable responsibility to protect your delegates. I urge you to act. I urge you to stop the crippling and paralyzing pain that parents, friends, families, and communities face as the result of gun violence. Generations will look back at these times and ask why did we do nothing? I urge you to be on the right side of history and allow people to lead dignified lives where they are not consumed by fear and are truly entitled to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The time is now to take action.
