Federal Mandatory Minimum Sentences for Sexual Assault

Sexual assault convictions prove to be ineffective in the United States, as widespread commotion continues to take place over the outcomes of recent rape cases that resulted in felons getting off with probation or short months of jail time. In doing so, this  re-victimizes the victim and sends the message that sexual assault is no big deal. Survivors of sexual assault live with the effects for the rest of their lives, while rapists get to walk away without noticeable remorse.California has taken steps in the right direction by passing Assembly Bill No. 2888, which prohibits a court from granting probation or suspending the imposition of a sentence if a person is convicted of rape or sexual assault. My group of social activists and I are students attending Vaughn International Studies Academy, and we feel as if it is time for our nation to follow suit and make this state law a federal law. Sign this petition to pressure decision makers to make this California bill a federal law, and to bring justice to those affected.
