We want to lower the age requirement to be declared independent from your parents when going to college to 18 or 19. We want to do this because when we start college we are 17 to 19 years old. However, according to the IRS you will be declared dependent if you are either younger than 19 years old or a college student younger than 24 years old. The federal student aid programs are based on the concept that it is primarily your and your family’s responsibility to pay for your education. A dependent student is assumed to have the support of parents, so the parents’ information has to be assessed along with the student’s, in order to get a full picture of the family’s financial strength. You could be living on your own and providing for yourself but you will still need to include your parents taxes. A problem that students often face is that their parents refuse to help them with this process. If you do not provide their information on the FAFSA form, your application will be considered “rejected,” and you might not be able to receive any federal student aid. We want to start a bill in oder to make this a law. This will help you obtain more money for your education. (It is for a project)
