This petition is about making elected officials who are planning to run for office (local, state, federal etc.) take and pass a mental and cognitive test to establish that they are mentally stable and fit to take office. Unless taking medication or their mental health is benign, it is strongly suggested that anyone with a mental illness be prohibited from running if they are diagnosed and not seeking treatment.

NOTE:This petition is not about discriminating against those who are mentally ill but instead to make sure that those who are interested in running for office are mentally healthy. This will help tackle mental illness as well as progress candidates to either take action with their mental health.

Background: I am a daughter of someone who has multiple and severe mental illnesses. I see firsthand how serious mental health is in society as well with my parent who is currently not taking medication. This petition is not to stigmatize but to improve mental health as well as not put stress to those who are not mentally stable. We do not speak on mental health much in this country and it is a serious issue. I am not saying that one who is mentally ill cannot be good in office. However with such an important position, we need to find a solution before it becomes a problem.
