Don’t Allow Impeached Presidents to Run for Re-election
Why this petition matters
The 2020 election is opening up with an impeached president seeking re-election.
This is a precedent not yet set by history or our constitution. Donald J. Trump is the third president formally impeached by congress. The first - Andrew Johnson. Johnson did try to run for re-election but did not have the votes to get there, and made this attempt before the 22nd amendment, which is where term limits are laid out. Then we have Bill Clinton, who was Impeached during a second term and therefore, ineligible to run for office. We now have Donald Trump seeking a second term after impeachment in his first term.
Why is this allowed? If a president could not even finish a first term without committing high crimes and misdemeanors (among many other things) then why should we give them another chance to accomplish them same thing?
The precedent being set is dangerous for the future of America. With this precedent, anyone can come into office and commit all kinds of offenses, be unable to be indicted whilst in office, and would be able to do this for a maximum of 8 years before anything can be done, other than removal from office, which we have seen, is not a guarantee upon impeachment.
This can destroy a nation.
I am calling on Congress to legislate that an impeached president may not run for additional terms, and I want them to act NOW. Will you join me?
