Kaiser- Please Repatriate My Critically Ill Husband back to U.S. Hospital from China

My husband Kevin Scriber II became critically ill earlier this month while teaching abroad in China. The week after submitting his PHD paperwork to Howard University - a life long goal and accomplishment- he was found partially paralyzed by his Chinese colleagues in his apartment. During a time he should have been celebrating he was now in a fight for his life.

After being rushed to the hospital (and later transferred to two additional hospitals) He quickly became fully paralyzed and fell into a light coma. He has been diagnosed with two overlapping autoimmune disorders and has additional health complications made worse by the paralysis. I was told to rush to China and with the help of Senator Cardin and Consulate in Chengdu I was given an expedited passport and visa. Now as my visa expiration draws near (Feb. 11th 2020) Kaiser has denied a medical flight to my husband stating that he’s receiving adequate care in China. While the Chinese doctors are wonderful they cannot communicate with my husband and need me constantly to sign documents and make medical decisions for my husband as well as communicate my husband’s needs and assist with meetings with Kaiser doctors. Chinese hospitals also require that families purchase and brings all daily necessities for the patient.

Kaiser has put me in the position of leaving my husband, who is unable to move much of his body, speak or open his eyes beyond a few seconds, alone in a country with his passport (and a visa expiring in June) and no way of receiving or paying for his daily necessities and with doctors who find it difficult to communicate with him and will not be able to have me sign the necessary documents in a timely manner for further treatment to occur. His prognosis is a 6-12 month recovery.

His Chinese medical team feels it is crucial he returns home. Please help me respectfully urge Kaiser Mid-Atlantic President Kim Horn and @KPMidAtlantic to personally review and appeal our denial and bring my husband home to receive the care he is in dire need of. I must return to work and take care of our household to ensure he has medical insurance and that we do not lose our home.
