The Lumad, meaning "native" or "indigenous" in Cebuano dialect are individuals from the Southern Philippines. Lumad schools have been targeted for a long time, and it has been a persistent problem for them. It is the Lumad youth's highest form of resistance to the problems that have plagued their communities for decades. It served as a place for Lumad people to claim their access to quality education, ancestral domain, and self-determination. They were continually deceived by corporations to sell their lands and properties because the state refused to provide basic social services.

For a long time, the state has attacked Lumad schools because it despises the role of education in deepening people's understanding of their difficulty. Ultimately, it targets these schools with aerial bombing, unlawful detention, red-tagging, and assassinations in order to promote the entry of capitalists to loot the Indigenous Peoples (IP) lands.

State attacks against Lumad schools include:

  • 584 total number of attacks ranging from school-related extrajudicial killings, sexual harrassment, aerial bombings, and more
  • 2,350 total number of victims of aerial bombardment
    44, 612 total number of victims of threat, harrassment, and intimidation
  • 18, 249 total number of victims of forcible evacuation and;
  • 3, 149 total number of victims of military encampment in schools and communities

In these schools, Lumad children are taught not to take up weapons, but to be critical of their struggle, in contrast to the state's "child warriors" narrative. Lumad schools offer opportunities for Lumads to not only continue their education but also to fight for their lands.

These growing challenges in right to education is alarming, the authority and citizens still think of this as a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, rather we should not see it as an issue that still exist in today's society.
