After Surviving UT Officers, Court Now Drags Immigrant To Trial During His Holy Time!

Two term controversial, Salt Lake County District Attorney Simarjit "Sim" Gill, is at an all-time career low. First, Gill wanted a 17 year-old ethnic Somali refugee/ immigrant to be tried as an adult after being nearly shot to death after he'd survived ridicule as a newcomer whom had to overcome tremendous odds to learn a foreign culture and language to conform to American society. Coming from a devoutly Muslim majority nation gripped by civil war, this teen Abdullahi Mohammed, [known as "Abdi"] whose family had to escape into neighboring Kenya, where he was born, during the Clinton administration, ironically survived those sworn to protect us!

Next, Gill wanted to conceal Abdi's traumatic body-camera footage showing how two officers rapidly pumped several rounds into him one winter night, seemingly determined to make him another "black male statistic." However, he survived through a nearly month long coma.

As the Salt Lake activist community was outraged that Gill wanted to charge Abdi as an adult felon and not release the high-profile body-camera footage, both proved to be futile attempts by the D.A. Although the Court has heard convincing expert testimony by his defense team, in April, the Juvenile Court appears now to be eager for a trial, on it's own terms without having considered that a high-profile case looms over a Muslim immigrant family, being dragged into a high-profile trial during the holy time called, "Ramadan" and its ending day called, "Eid-al Fitr" that follows, which lacks compassion and demonstrates intolerance toward those aiding Abdi's family, as well, like the Somali language interpreter and caseworker also of Somali origin, during a climatic time of the Islamic year, to unite together with loved ones and observe their faith.

The same public, so vocal about Abdi's other rights, are asked to sign this petition to be delivered to the Juvenile Court and his defense team so that a Motion delaying trial past their holy period, which ends June 28th this year, can be realized.

This petition asks that this family time, marked by gift giving, sharing feasts and visiting friends in their homes, or in a religious setting could be uninterrupted by Abdi's life-changing trial. Your signature would demonstrate to the wider community that the peaceful Salt Lake Muslim minority community is deserving of compassion and respect. Thank you!
