Tackle domestic violence as part of counter-extremism

The UK Government's CONTEST programme aims to tackle harm from extremist ideologies. However, it only focuses on terrorism - not on domestic violence.
This is despite the fact that:
- Domestic violence is a manifestation of an extremist (usually anti-woman) ideology
- It is an ideology that kills and ruins lives: two women are killed every week by a current or former partner, while one in five women have experienced domestic sexual abuse since the age of 16
- Many people who go on to commit acts of terrorism start by abusing their family members
Funding anti-domestic violence initiatives as part of a counter-extremism strategy would therefore reduce the appalling harm suffered by women, children, and men from this form of extremism, as well as catching more potential terrorists at an earlier point on their 'journey'.
