I have been looking for suitable reasonably priced rental housing in a small town in Nova Scotia for 3 months. Rents are skyrocketing, my landlord called a hearing to have my lease terminated early so he could increase the rent, and I am struggling to find somewhere to live. Over the past few months, I have come to learn I am not alone with this struggle, I’ve heard many stories from friends and family, who live in multiple provinces, who have experienced the same issues.

After being told time after time by local authorities there are no resources for someone in my position (I am a full-time working professional who has never struggled to find housing before) I am beyond frustrated. When reaching out for help the response I get is “we can’t help you unless you’re homeless”. After appealing to my local MLA, MP, and our premier I have found that this is a widespread issue. Housing prices are going up (both for sale and for rent) and many available units are out of reach for a single individual.

It is my hope that with enough signatures and stories from people in a similar situation we can make this a real topic of discussion within all levels of government. I do not expect this petition to improve my individual situation, but I do think it is time to have a national discussion around the cost of living and income stagnation from coast to coast. If I am struggling with this issue, I can only imagine how challenging it would be for people living on minimum wage or for seniors living on a fixed income.

It is time for our politicians and other bodies to have a real conversation about this issue before we have a full-blown crisis in this country.
