Most climate scientists around the world believe that climate change will reach a point of no return unless fossil fuel burning is curtailed within the decade. Without urgent corrective action, positive warming feedbacks will accelerate climate change risking massive ecosystem collapse. The global food supply will be endangered.  Glaciers will melt, raising sea level and flooding low lying areas.

Populist leaders on both ends of the political spectrum have provided society with no clear direction on the safest path forward for civilization. The right has put its collective head in the sand, and the left is pushing massive solar and wind power mega-projects that cannot address the issue without a global return to pre-industrial agrarian society. The quiet, moderate majority is paralyzed to inaction due to the well-funded misinformation agenda being foist upon us by extremists.

It is time we make our voices heard. There is a sound environmentally friendly solution to this dilemma that will allow modern society to continue.  It is realistic, achievable, and can be implemented in the time remaining.

We are calling on the governments of the world to mobilize their resources and replace all fossil fuel electrical generating capacity with modern safe nuclear generators, supplemented by renewable sources over the next 10 years.

Although renewable resources like solar and wind will help in the transition, it is widely recognized that these low density power sources will be insufficient to supplant the energy density of fossil fuels on the necessary timescale. Nuclear energy is the only alternative power source with sufficient energy density to quickly replace the majority of fossil fuel applications. Nuclear energy is not only the safest and cleanest option available, it also requires significantly fewer natural resources and land area to build the same generating capacity as solar and wind.

Nuclear energy has a poor reputation due to the disaster at Chernobyl where 29 people died, and the meltdown at Fukushima where nobody died. But put this into perspective: to get the same amount of power as the Chernobyl reactor using solar energy, one would need to use up a huge land area in solar panels as per normal operating procedures. In North America, billions of kilowatt hours are being safely generated by nuclear power every year.  The largest North American nuclear accident was Three Mile Island, and NOBODY DIED!   In the Fukushima 'disaster', nobody was killed by the meltdown, and potential deaths due to leaked radiation are expected to total on the order of 100 - 1000 over coming decades. This is much fewer than the 3 million who die every year from air pollution due to fossil fuel burning. Tens of thousands of people have been drowned by major hydroelectric dam failures. Nuclear currently supplies about 10% of the world's energy, and <0.01% of the fatalities, so in terms of safety it is more than three orders of magnitude safer than currently accepted power generation methods.

Nuclear waste has a tiny volume compared to the waste from all other power sources. Nuclear waste is a contained radioactive solid that gets safer exponentially with time. The lead and cadmium in solar panels is not recyclable and is toxic forever. Nuclear can get us through this difficult time and is safer than the alternatives that society accepts as normal.

Society needs to learn these facts and get over its irrational fear of radiation. Please show you really care for the environment by supporting this petition.
