Tell Justin Trudeau to say NO to Zibi condos & YES to protecting Algonquin sacred site
Justin Trudeau needs to find his heart.
Help the Prime Minister make reconciliation with Indigenous peoples real by protecting a sacred spiritual site of the Algonquin Nation that sits right under his nose, in the centre of Canada's capital city, Ottawa.
Trudeau can use declaratory powers in Canada's constitution to say NO to the Zibi condo project and YES to permanent protection of the Algonquin sacred site, Akikodjiwan. The site is made up of 3 islands and a magnificent waterfall held back by a hydro dam since 1910.
An honorable Indigenous vision for the sacred site has existed for more than 20 years. But during the Harper regime, the minister responsible for federal lands in Ottawa, John Baird, turned two of the islands (held by the National Capital Commission) over to a developer so it could build condos for the wealthy. The City of Ottawa approved rezoning of those islands from parkland to residential/commercial in support of the condo developers.
OPPOSITION TO THE CONDO PROPOSAL: More than 1,000 Ottawans have protested and written letters against the Zibi condo development since 2015. Renown Indigenous architect, Douglas Cardinal, and 4 others fought the municipality's rezoning in the courts for two years. Six advocacy groups are supporting protection of the sacred site. They are Free the Falls, STOP WINDMILL, It is Sacred, The Greenspace Alliance of Canada's Capital, Citzens for Responsible Development Ottawa, and Akikodjiwan. Watch this video from June 2016 to learn more about opposition to the controversial condo project.
IT'S TIME FOR JUSTIN TRUDEAU TO TAKE ACTION: Help him make good on his promise that "no relationship is more important to me and to Canada than the one with Indigenous peoples." Send him two messages:
