Student and New Graduate Financial Aid During COVID-19 Crisis

During the COVID -19 crisis many Canadian citizens and businesses are able to apply for financial support to both the Federal and Provincial governments. Unfortunately, most students and new graduates of post-secondary institutions do not qualify for any of these financial aid programs, nor are they able to apply for employment insurance. The lack of financial assistance for students, during these troubling times has left many students in limbo and many are facing dire consequences.

A six-month interest free moratorium on repayment of student loans was announced by the Federal and Provincial governments, however this will not sustain students with living expenses in the meantime. The means for thousands of students to survive is only by the means of student loans and summer employment. Now, with the economic downturn and the COVID-19 pandemic, jobs are and will continue to be few and far between. Most students are unable to find employment and many students do not have family that are able to help them. Too many students are left in a perilous situation. There is no aid package to help them. We are a group that has fallen between the cracks.

This petition is a proposal to the Federal and Provincial Governments to put forth an application package for students and new graduates to access emergency loans while not in studies. Perhaps this loan could be an addition to their current existing loan. Many students need aid to survive during this crisis. A loan will not only sustain Alberta’s current students but is also an investment into the future workforce generation. This petition is not for a grant, but merely a loan, to sustain those post-secondary students that need help and have no where else to turn.

Governments are saying ‘we’re all in this together, so please sign this petition and let’s work together to encourage our government(s) to find a solution for our student population and for our futures.
