Tell the Trudeau Government to STOP the CERB CLAWBACK that is hurting vulnerable Canadians!

In 2020, 9 Million Canadians applied for the CERB (Canadian Emergency Response Benefit) offered by the Federal Government during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In December 2020, the CRA sent letters to 441,000 CERB recipients. These people had:

1. Applied for CERB

2. Been told they qualified, either per the website or by speaking directly to a CRA employee

3. Received the CERB

In these letters, the CRA said that, for a self-employed person to qualify for CERB, in 2019 they should have had a NET INCOME of $5,000.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the CRA website DID NOT SPECIFY if the $5,000 income meant NET or GROSS. Those who spoke to CRA employees got unclear information. Some were even told that it meant "Gross Income".

After several months, the CRA updated the website so it said "Net Income", essentially changing the rules halfway through.

We want the Federal Government and the CRA to honour the terms of CERB assistance, as they were originally set out.

Our friend Janet received a letter asking her to pay back $14,000. Janet is a pensioner. She does not have $14,000. She used the CERB money for rent, and bills, and helping her friends.

We believe that the majority of Canadians, like Janet, applied for CERB in good faith. Thousands of people have lost their jobs, and have used up any savings they had to survive, pay rent, and buy groceries.

Clawing back the CERB from the most vulnerable Canadians is WRONG.
