Bill C-10 is an amendment to the Canadian Broadcasting Act which would require streaming services like YouTube, Spotify and Netflix to support Canadian content on their platforms. The Bill was first toted as an amendment to include only corporate enterprises, but in the past few days as of writing, the Bill could require all social media posts to be reviewed by Canadian government censors in order to determine if these posts are "Canadian enough" to be considered Canadian Content. This act places the free speech of all Canadians online at risk! The government could gain the ability to censor online content that challenges their beliefs or opinions. In doing so, criticism is not shared or known, the press becomes stifled and freedom of speech, which is a right outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, is diminished. As a society, we cannot let the government dictate what we say or post online. If we do, the notion of a free country ceases to exist. Freedom of speech is not a bi-partisan topic. It is the fabric of our nation and must be protected at all costs.
