Mental illness can be a lifelong struggle. One with an illness can face many situations in their lives that force them to seek immediate medical attention and surveillance for their own safety. The public health care insurance plan in Ontario allows for regular physical ailments to be fully covered by OHIP in ways of going to a clinic or hospital. As well, pshyciatrists are also covered under the plan. Psychiatrists do help with mental health and prevent situations in which a mentally ill person needs medical attention, though, it isn’t always the most helpful way in which someone can get help. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is a method in which a psychologist trains someone with a mental illness to counterract the effects of said illness. This is something that helped me immensely through high school, due to my psychologist teaching me how to fight through my thoughts and become more social which helped both my mood and my overall lifestyle. This petition is to shed light on how forms of therapy be covered under OHIP should be necessary due to the large amounts of people struggling with mental illness and not all of those people having the privilege of a good private insurance plan. My friend sees a psychologist but since his private insurance limits the amount of money per family, for the visits he requires regularly, his father, who suffers from bipolar disorder, must give up his ability to seek therapy due to limited funds. No one should have to waive there right to get help. Please sign this petition so that different forms of mental health therapy performed by registered psychologists be recognized as a medically necessary service in Ontario.
