Dear Prime Minister Trudeau:

Your legacy as Prime Minister needs be to a quick and strategic response to the needs of the Missing, Murdered and Incarcerated Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA (two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual citizens) in our country.

In order to address the June 2019 recommendations of the national inquiry on MMIW, we the undersigned urge your government to begin by:

  • Establishing a national Indigenous human-rights ombudsperson and a national Indigenous and human-rights tribunal to ensure equitable access to employment, housing, education, safety and potable water.
  • Launching health and wellness services aimed at Indigenous peoples particularly, so that health care is available to vulnerable Indigenous people in their own communities.
  • Creating safe and affordable transit and transportation services in, to and from remote communities, to reduce dependence on risky activities such as hitchhiking
  • Funding the policing in Indigenous communities so their services are equitable compared to those in non-Indigenous communities, including modern information technology, major-crime units and crime
