Recent outbreaks of measles, mumps and more have groups and governments taking action both in Canada and overseas. These have risen in direct correlation with antivax movements using social media to spread misinformation about vaccines.

This is leading to very real consequences. There are a variety of ways lawmakers are combatting the spread. The UK has denounced social media platforms as “grossly irresponsible” in regards to letting the myths about vaccinations run wild. And while regulations imposed on tech giants to remove antivax pages may be helpful, this is as far as the world’s governments have gone, in regards to going after businesses making money directly off of endangering public health.

Several companies in recent decades have been fined or regulated for such actions. The most famous of these is big tobacco. Presently in Canada, advertising space on cigarette packages are required to be mostly filled with health warnings concerning the contents.

Essential oils, healing crystals and alternative medicines certainly do not affect the body the same way tobacco does. But the time has come to place responsibility on all businesses benefiting from movements endangering the health and safety of Canadians across the country. This petition calls for federal legislature, requiring that all companies dealing “alternative medicine” put a warning label on their products stating loud and clear that they are not alternatives to vaccines, and - if it be the case -  there is no scientific evidence to prove otherwise.
