I sat in my car listening to The Hip this morning upon the sad news of Gord Downies death and watched my wife quietly stare out the window and sob like she had lost a brother, an uncle or an amazing friend. It occurred to me that he is our family, he is the best of each of us, who we might like to be, not without fault, but nearly perfectly Canadian.
Gord holds a place, not just our collective memories, but in the actual events that shaped our lives; whether that was around a campfire, busting out of town on a road trip or simply falling in love each other and this place. He has been the anchor around which several generations have secured a small piece of their identity. Quietly inserted, like we may not have noticed, his soundtrack is the soundtrack of us, of what it is to be essentially Canadian.
I am incredibly grateful to have witnessed his contributions and incredibly sad with all Canadians today to know that these creative contributions have ended. With this I petition that memorialize Gord with a national holiday/day of recognition to continue to celebrate him and the contributions of the arts community in Canada to Canada.
Gord has given us is permission to like being "Canadian" and to be proud. We should honour this by rediscovering our Canadianess, we should celebrate what he knew better than most, it's tricky, complicated and wonderful being Canadian.
He has been the mirror we pass by quickly glancing to notice a better version of ourselves, thank you Gord and we wish you grace too!
