Calling for the immediate suspension of mortgage and rent payments until the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

We urge to freeze rent and mortgage payment of commercial and residential until the COVID-19 pandemic is over so as to protect tenants from the threat of eviction. The Coronavirus Outbreak is affecting a lot of people who can’t work and lost their jobs. It makes all business owners are losing business and the economy to a standstill. Many people all are struggling to pay their bills even they have no income. Urgent Financial Measures or Emergency Fund to support businesses, workers and anyone in need through the crisis must be provided immediately.

VANCOUVER -- A B.C. union is calling for the immediate suspension of mortgage and rent payments until the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Stephanie Smith, president of the BC Government Employees' Union, said the demand is part of the union's mission to protect workers during the crisis.

"The BCGEU is urging our members and all working people to trust the science and follow public health recommendations," said Smith in a statement issued on Friday. "The federal and provincial governments could support our message by suspending mortgage and rent payments during the COVID-19 pandemic to make sure working people can afford to do the right thing."
