Canada Take Action to End Female Genital Mutilation

I started this petition when I was sixteen years old.  I am so grateful for all the people who have signed it, but a lot more needs to be done to end female genital mutilation (#EndFGM) and the Government of Canada, Canadian Civil Society, and Canadian citizens play an immense part in that.

Over the past year I, along with Farzana Doctor Klara Hillman and Giselle Portenier have created the End FGM Canada Network focusing on urging the Canadian government to acknowledge that FGM/C is a Canadian issue and to create a National Action Plan to support survivors and to protect girls at risk. In addition, we work to encourage the Canadian government to take a lead internationally and focus more development aid on the human rights battle to end FGM/C worldwide.

It’s important to remember that female genital mutilation is now an issue on every continent except Antarctica and including Canada, where unofficial estimates state that we have upwards of 100,000 survivors and thousands of girls at risk.  For far too long there has been a wall of silence in Canada around this issue; people have been afraid to discuss it for fear of being called racist.  But FGM has no basis in religion; it is child abuse and an abuse of the fundamental right of girls, and it’s time we ended the silence and started the conversation to end female genital mutilation once and for all.

Just think, every 10 seconds another girl somewhere in the world is cut!

Please sign this petition to urge the Canadian government to take action and to stand up against this horrendous human rights violation. Empower these women and girls and let their voices be heard worldwide.
