The military in Myanmar (Burma) carried out a coup against the democratically elected government of Myanmar on February 1, 2021. They arrested and detained the elected officials and representatives who were about to convene a new parliament. There will be large scale oppression and violations of human rights in the country based on the past experience with brutal military coups. The leaders of this military coup should be condemned for their actions and punitive steps should be taken by the international community to restore a budding democracy in the country. We urge the Canadian government and the United Nations to take a lead in denouncing this atrocity and injustice inflicted by the Myanmar military on the people. Efforts should be made to push them to release all those who have been detained during the coup. The Myanmar community in Canada request Prime Minister Mr Justin Trudeau and Secretary General Mr Antonio Guterres to take strong actions against the perpetrators of this gross injustice infringing the human and political rights of the Myanmar citizens.
