On behalf of Azerbaijani-Canadians and over 40 million Azerbaijanis worldwide, we call the Canadian Government to use its influence to condemn the aggression of the Republic of Armenia launched on July 12th, 2020 towards the Republic of Azerbaijan, and to urge the Government of Armenia to implement the UN Security Council resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 of 1993, the UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/48/114 and other GA resolutions which have been utterly disregarded up until now. These resolutions call for "immediate complete and unconditional withdrawal of the occupying forces" of Armenia from the territory of Azerbaijan. On July 12th, 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis in both countries, Armenian armed forces launched an aggressive attack on the province of Tovuz in the north-west region of Azerbaijan targeting civilians and shelling the province with various types of artillery and tanks. The Tovuz province is of global energy supply importance, as it is the crossing point for oil and gas pipelines, that reduce the European and Turkish dependence on Russian gas and oil supply. It is of no coincidence that the aggression from the Republic of Armenia is taking place at times when Turkey significantly reduced the purchasing of Russian gas, replacing it with the Azerbaijani energy resources. The ministry of defense of the Republic of Armenia threatened Azerbaijan with the invasion of “new advantageous positions” and mentioned that Armenia would invade “new territories in the event of a new war with Azerbaijan”. This threat is being executed as we, the Azerbaijani-Canadians, urge the government of Canada to take a solid stance in this matter to prevent war and killings of innocent men and women in the region. The Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Russian led military alliance, which Armenia is a member of, has a mandate to get involved from the Armenian side in case of the aggression turning into a full-scale war. This war in the region not only threatens the peace and stability in the Caucasus region but also jeopardizes security in the global context. As of today, Armenia occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory and expelled 800 000 Azerbaijani civilians from their lands in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. Overall, because of this conflict, Azerbaijan has over 1 million refugees and internally displaced persons who have been unable to return to their ancestral homes for over 30 years! On behalf of Azerbaijani-Canadians, we call the government of Canada to condemn the ongoing Armenian aggression towards Azerbaijan in hope to deescalate the situation at the province of Azerbaijan and to move this situation along with to its rightful resolution within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan: to stop the illegal Armenian military occupation to enforce the UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions to remove all Armenian military forces illegally stationed in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan to allow the return of Azerbaijani displaced persons back to their homes Justice and fairness must be restored!
