Grace Anglican Church Markham started this petition to Justin Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada/Premier ministre du Canada) and
Indigenous Peoples and nations in Canada have known for too long the miseries of the residential schools, a fact that the rest of Canada has ignored for far too long - a blight on Canadian society. A pathway to healing for all was introduced in The Truth And Reconciliation Commission’s report ‘calls to action’. What action there has been is slow and appears insincere. We call upon The Government of Canada, The Canadian Senate, and The Province of Ontario to prioritize the recommendations of The TRC by:
The Government of Canada:
- enhance the drive for fresh clean drinking water on all First nations communities.
- implement the remaining calls to action contained in the TRC report.
dedicate funds, personnel, and resources to assist in the search for the missing children of the Residential School system as outlined in the TRC. - provide the financial resources for child education and medical care equal to the amounts the non indigenous children receive off reserve.
- withdraw the legal challenges against residential school survivors
The Canadian Senate:
- pass Bill C-15, the enabling legislation behind The United Nations Declaration on The Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Province of Ontario:
- reintroduce Indigenous Studies into the curriculum that was so unceremoniously cancelled in 2019.
The time for just thoughts and prayers has passed; it is now time for policy and change.
