Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, Minister Sajjan and Minister McKenna,

To mark the 6th annual Global Day of Action Against Military Spending and Earth Day on April 22nd, we are sending you this open letter to express our concern that the Government of Canada spends too much on the military and too little on peace and sustainable development. According to the Public Accounts of Canada, the federal government spent $23 billion on the Department of National Defence but only $1.5 billion on Environment Canada.

We are calling on you:

(i) To reduce the military budget and re-allocate the funds to urgent environmental and social needs, such as for First Nations communities in crisis, for mental health care, for affordable housing to end homelessness and other urgent needs.

(ii) To sign and ratify the Arms Trade Treaty and cancel the $15 billion deal to export light armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia

(iii) To withdraw the proposal to send 300 Canadian Armed Forces and Special Forces to Iraq

(iv) To develop and implement policies to end violence in all its forms and to promote peaceful conflict resolution as required the new United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Goal #16)

(v) To invest in and build a green, peaceful economy that achieves net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and sustains resilient communities as recommended in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 5th Assessment report

Canada has made a commitment to help achieve the United Nations’ new Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The goals cannot be met with the continued waste of resources on weapons and war. It is time to move our tax dollars from militarism to sustainability and to adequately fund the social and environmental programs that will bring genuine human security to Canadians.
