Canada needs to take action against impaired driving. Raising penalties, more education, and asking some simple questions can make all the difference.
Impaired driving counts for 58% of automotive accidents in Canada, and is the number one cause in teen/young adult deaths. The sad thing about this is it could've been avoided very easily.
476 deaths are from being drunk while driving
614 deaths are from being high while driving
407 deaths are from both drunk and high while driving
1487 lives in 2015 alone.
Raising the penalties can scare off people from driving impaired in the first place.
More education is needed also, 33% of teens think driving high is less dangerous than driving drunk. 25% of parents of these teens also think driving high is less dangerous than driving drunk. That's ridiculous. Another thing the government can enforce is make every bar and club have a person that asks you how you’re getting home. If you answer that you're driving they can check how many drinks you’ve had and then decide from that point if you are able to do so. If not they can call a taxi or an uber for you. The police can also have more officers patrolling the streets. No parent wants a police officer to come to their front door and tell them their child has died in a car accident because they, or someone else were under that influence of alcohol or cannabis.
Thank you for taking your precious time reading this and signing this. This can save many lives including yours and the ones you love.
