Air pollution results in more than 7000 premature deaths in Canada every year, at a cost of more than $36 billion. (http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/air-pollution-results-in-7-700-premature-deaths-in-canada-each-year-report-says-1.4140794
Air pollution also contributes to respiratory illnesses. For example, asthma cost $12 billion including $3.4 billion in direct health care costs and $8.6 billion in indirect costs. Direct costs of asthma, which include medical/nursing care and medication, in Canada are estimated at $600 million per year. (http://www.asthma.ca/corp/newsroom/pdf/asthmastats.pdf
Meanwhile, Canadian CO2 emissions have steadily increased (https://www.ec.gc.ca/indicateurs-indicators/?lang=en&n=FBF8455E-1 and we actually rank in the top ten countries in the world for emissions per capita. We, the undersigned, believe that Canada needs to join France and the UK in declaring a ban on gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 or sooner. As governments around the world make these declarations, it will force transportation manufacturers to make changes to their products, and it will accelerate the investment in cleaner infrastructure. It will also give consumers the confidence to choose greener options sooner.
