Why this petition matters

Started by Michael Davies

Canada must ban the transportation of diluted bitumen, also known as Dilbit. This will prevent the Trans Mountain Pipeline from bringing Dilbit to the Port of Vancouver for the purpose of loading it onto oil tankers.

The BC Government has tried to uphold such a law but it has been overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada. It is time for Canada to not only recognize existing aboriginal rights in Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution, and the special status of Quebec, but also to protect the unique beauty of the BC environment, especially its wilderness and coastlines.

We insist that there are safe ways to transport bitumen in its natural state and that diluting it for the purpose of pumping through a pipeline should be illegal in BC.

I have worked in the mining industry for 40 years and believe there are pragmatic ways to deal with Canada's natural resources that protect the environment as well as employment and the economy.

Banning Dilbit could not only prevent a major environmental disaster but an economic one as well. It will force producers to use different ways to get their product to market that also make more sense economically.
