Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre is a maximum security centre in London, Ontario. Not only is EMDC very, very unsanitary and overpopulated, it is also extremely dangerous for inmates and staff. There have been many unusual deaths happening at EMDC for years, including suicides, overdoses and brutal murders. A Ontario Health Commissioner claimed EMDC had many problems including but not limited to:

- The jail is overcrowded, with cells built for one holding three to five people.

- It's easy to get illegal drugs within the jail and there's concern about overdose-related deaths.

- There are months-long waiting lists to see doctors, dentists and psychiatrists, which is a MAJOR human rights issue

- Some prisoners have been in segregation for "a couple of years" and there's no plan to address the problem. Which is extremely wrong, considering socialization is a huge part of the rehabilitation and action plan for inmates.

- Many staff members have to contact the labour board as they are genuinely fearful of going to work everyday.

These are just a FEW of the issues at EMDC, and as we have never seen ANY change, nothing will get better until we do.

THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO ACT NOW, INMATES RIGHTS ARE BEING ACTIVELY VIOLATED AND IT IS MORALLY WRONG... IT IS ON ALL OF US ESPECIALLY OUR POLICY MAKERS!
