I'm a student who currently attends Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas. Recently, I saw the news about Princeton University changing the name of its public policy school and a residential college named after the 28th president. The reason for this action was due to this president's 'racist thinking, policy’s, and actions.

For those who are unaware, Woodrow Wilson has been long discussed for his racist thinking, and policies, and some would say he deliberately and intentionally destroyed Black middle-class communities in America. He also shared many views with the Ku Klux Klan and resegregated many federal agencies. Probably one of his most infamous actions of racism came from his decision to screen the movie The Birth Of A Nation(A racist 1915 film which was originally titled "The Klansmen") at the White House immediately after he took office.

This petition is more than just about changing the name of a school. It’s about standing up for the principals of racial equality and social justice, which the killing of George Floyd and subsequent protests have made critically important today. Some may see that the renaming of buildings seems "silly" and "erases history", and we must in particular respect school alumni who care and give so much. Sometimes during the course of history, we must stand up and do what makes us uncomfortable or upset to support ALL of our citizens.
