Victory! #JusticeForKayleb, at LONG LAST!!!
Mar 14, 2016 — When I received the email a few days ago from Stacy, Kayleb's mother, that she had the official papers in hand dismissing ALL (yes, ALL!) charges against Kayleb, I thought my heart would burst. I was in public, but I could not stop the tears from coming.
The horrific injustice done to Kayleb, who is now 13 years old, for the "crime" of being autistic, was unspeakable - but now it is over. Not long ago, Kayleb was facing the risk of being an 11 year old "felon" due to no fault of his own. Yet now, after all this time...after the efforts, concerns, prayers, well-wishes, emails, calls, and other actions of over 150,000 people from nearly every continent...Kayleb is FREE. His record and reputation are intact.
It has been a long time that many of you have been in this journey alongside Kayleb and his family. Having had the privilege to meet Kayleb and his family in person, I can attest not only to the amazing resilience and insight of this young man, but also to the unswerving loyalty, love, and support he has from his family. This has been an ordeal for them all, but they have never wavered in their commitment to ensuring Kayleb obtained the justice he deserved. Having all of you to help has been a tremendous source of support in letting them know that they are NOT alone. They have an enormous community out there - autistic and non-autistic, young and old, ranging from alabaster to ebony and from Australia to Zimbabwe - who have all been on Kayleb's side and who are now REJOICING with him for the victory!
Kayleb's victory is ALL of our victory. People deserve to be treated with respect and given the proper supports that they need regardless of ability status, age, race, etc. The voices of the people combined have POWER! Never underestimate what your one signature, your one email, your one phone call, your one tweet or share, your one blog post, etc. can do. And never accept that we have to "accept" the unacceptable for our lives!
#JusticeForKayleb, finally. And that justice is justice for all. Justice that wouldn't have happened without all of you.
I am beyond grateful for the love and concern you all have shown to Kayleb and his family through all of this. You are amazing, you are powerful, and you are VICTORIOUS!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you ALL!
