Exciting #JusticeForKayleb updates; pls read!!!
May 14, 2015 — We are excited to provide this update! Many of you have been working hard to advocate on his behalf and to draw much needed attention to disability discrimination and the school-to-prison pipeline. Though the governor has yet to provide a substantive comment about Kayleb's unjust convictions, it seems that he is hearing the community's concerns and is making efforts to address the issues raised by the Center for Public Intergrity and by thousands of Kayleb's supporters.
We are happy to share that Governor McAuliff has asked select members of his cabinet to research the "root cause" for why Virginia schools refer students to police and courts more often than any other state and recommend policy changes. The cabinet members include Secretary of Education Anne Holton, Secretary of Health and Human Resources Bill Hazel and Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran. According to Brian Coy, official spokesperson for Governor McAuliffe, this matter is being take seriously and the governor intends to listen to the recommends and "act on it," adding: "Virginia parents send their children to school to learn, not to end up in the juvenile-justice system."

But...it's not over yet. While we are cautiously optimistic about changes that can be made to help ALL students, including disabled students and students of color, to be treated more fairly, this doesn't change Kayleb's situation. So we must continue to act. And one way to do so is through a #JusticeForKayleb social media advocacy campaign being held online all day next Thursday (May 21st).
ALL are invited! Let's reach out to the governor, his cabinet, and any and everyone who will listen on Kayleb's behalf! Please join the event below and share widely!!!
Sincerely, Morénike and Lei
