By signing this petition, you are giving the chance to allow low-risk and non-violent prisoners to be put to use during this Pandemic (whether that be on tag, controlled environments or on probation) instead of sitting in their cell for 23 and a half hours a day.

The number of staff in prisons has dramatically reduced since the COVID-19 outbreak, leaving the prisons dirtier than usual and the guards that are still able to work have no PPE to wear either. Additionally, guards are getting unwell as the social distancing rule is not being implemented, prisoners are left to share vapes and shake hands and showers have been reduced drastically.

They have suspended any form of education, the use of the gym and the cells are small with oftentimes more than one person left to share them. This is catastrophic with the spread of this Virus, as most prisons do not have the space to properly isolate prisoners should they be at risk of infection. They have the right to healthcare, it is not a death sentence!

As the government are implementing unprecedented rules in an attempt to combat the COVID-19 outbreak, this could be a chance for us to use low-risk and non-violent prisoners to help those in need during this time. It costs around £4000 a month to keep a prisoner inside, whereas on tag just £166 a month. It could also help these low-risk and non-violent prisoners with their rehabilitation - yes they have made mistakes but it doesn't mean they don't care about their country and the wellbeing of those living in it.
