In January of 2022, the iconic UF gimmick account known as "ufgirlboss" was disabled by Instagram. This act is not only anti-women's-rights, anti-gay, anti-freedom-of-speech, anti-social-justice, and anti-girlboss...it is also anti-funny. UFgirlboss worked to create a sex-positive, empowering, intersectional, and fun safe space at UF (and virtually). They were informative, encouraging, influential, and as clever as they are sexy. The deplatforming of ufgirlboss shows Instagram's tendency to silence those who are working to make a positive change in their community (but yet Instagram still allows misinformation, hate, and trash content to spread?). UFgirlboss allowed people to connect with one another, learn more about themselves, and find their place in the small community they created. The ufgirlboss admins were trailblazers. They truly paved the way and were able to create something like no other uf gimmick account ever has or will. Their content, while mostly consisting of absurd/satirical sociopolitical commentary, was as silly for some as it was powerful for others. The ufgirlboss admins used their platform to spread awareness, provide quality sexual education, promote small businesses, and to make UF feel a little more like home. Who will remind us to gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss during these dark times? Instagram, hear our plea. Bring our girls home <3
