Eric Garrity started this petition to Joe Biden and

This letter is a declaration that we, the Central Oregon Democratic Socialists of America, democratic party members, progressives, new and veteran campaign volunteers, community organizers, and activists cannot and will not support the candidacy of the presumptive democratic nominee, Vice President Joe Biden, without a fair and independent investigation into the sexual assault allegations made by Tara Reade. This investigation must include an independent review of Vice President Biden’s Senate Records donated to the University of Delaware. Any candidate credibly accused of sexual assault by reaching under the victim’s clothes to insert his fingers, backed up by a history of inappropriate and unwelcome kissing and touching is an unacceptable candidate for office, let alone the presidency of the United States. Nominating such a candidate to face Donald Trump during the 2020 election is unsustainable for a progressive movement and for democracy itself. If Vice President Biden is unwilling to accept an independent investigation, he must step aside before the Democratic National Convention so that the Democratic Party can nominate another candidate, one who is not credibly accused of sexual assault.

We want to support the democratic nominee for president and defeat Donald Trump in the 2020 election. However, any candidate who deliberately hides information vital to a fair election does not represent democracy. The evidence proves that Tara Reade worked for Vice President Biden before being demoted and eventually removed from her position, that Tara Reade believed she was inappropriately treated by Vice President Biden, supporting witnesses corroborate Tara’s story, and the documented evidence is sealed by the University of Delaware. These records are expected to contain documentation of Tara Reade’s complaint, demotion, and ultimate dismissal, which have gone unexplained by the Biden campaign and fit with a pattern of retaliation against victims of sexual assault. If Vice President Biden’s records remain sealed and if the campaign does not support a full and thorough investigation of the alleged and corroborated sexual assault of Tara Reade, then we cannot support Vice President Biden’s nomination.

The presidential election is not a court of law where a case must be made beyond a reasonable doubt. The Democratic Party can choose to nominate a suitable candidate with a record and reputation worthy of the office of President. The #MeToo Movement has taught us how to stand up in the face of sexual assault violence. Inappropriate touches were enough to justly demand the resignation of Senator Al Franken. A corroborated story of attempted sexual assault was enough to demand the withdrawal of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court. Donald Trump’s own history of dishonesty, alleged sexual harrassment, and rape have made clear his unfitness for the office of President. If the lesson we have learned from Donald Trump is to be more like him, then we, as democrats, are lost. The corroborating witnesses supporting Tara Reade’s allegation of sexual assault against Vice President Biden demand further investigation, at the very least. Vice President Biden has run a campaign predicated on his decency, humanity and morality. If these allegations are born out by the evidence or Vice President Biden refuses to cooperate with an impartial investigation, then he should do the decent thing, and step down to allow the Democratic Party to nominate a candidate that is able to unite all democrats and to defeat Donald Trump.
