Phi Kappa Theta (PKT) is a fraternity at MIT. PKT has a rich history of philanthropy, a supportive brotherhood, successful alumni, and social prowess.
PKT has a social event almost every week--some are smaller events for brothers and close friends, and some are larger events open to students from MIT and some neighboring schools. PKT prides itself on running social events cleanly and safely, while still showing their guests a good time. MIT's Fraternities, Sororities, and Independent Living Groups office (FSILG) allows houses like PKT to throw parties, as long as they adhere to the office's guidelines. PKT has a beautiful track record of working with FSILG to ensure our parties meet all the requirements. All events are registered in advance, the number of guests is monitored throughout the night to ensure the house is never over capacity, and all parties are checked on by a Risk Management Chair as well as the MIT Police. At every party, 15 or so brothers are assigned duties. 3 or 4 of these brothers are assigned to door--letting people in who are on the guest list and ensuring the house stays under capacity. There are also a few brothers who stand outside all night, making sure people don't loiter on the sidewalk and telling large groups of people to leave the area. The house door and steps are monitored and controlled constantly throughout the duration of the party. In cases where the crowd is too large, brothers will call the MIT police to help break the crowd up. This is what the MIT police wants the brothers to do, and it is the house's agreement with the police that parties are allowed as long as all these requirements are met. And PKT consistently meets them all.
PKT's neighbor, however, disagrees. This neighbor, whom we will call "Lydia," has a deep, unprovoked hatred for the house. While almost all of PKT's neighbors respect the brotherhood, Lydia does nothing but cause problems. Lydia calls the police every party, to the point where everyone in both the Boston and MIT police forces knows who she is. She usually complains about too many people being outside (note: these people are often total strangers to the house who try to get in but are turned away at the door). On THREE separate occasions, she's complained about a girl urinating in her lawn (however, on all three of these occasions, there were multiple brothers outside patrolling the sidewalk who didn't see anything). The bottom line is the Lydia will say or do anything to hurt the house, to the point where she's contacted the Boston Fire Department, FSILG, and even the president of MIT. Lydia yells at brothers as they walk down the street. One time, she even sprayed a brother with a water hose for no apparent reason. Brothers have talked to multiple other people in her apartment building, and they all agree that Lydia is unpleasant and out of control. Lydia is a vessel of hatred and contempt, and PKT, for whatever reason, is her current target.
The brothers would love to just forget about Lydia's wrath and move on, however she lately has been going too far. Last week, Lydia called the Boston Police and Boston Fire Department, five minutes after out party started. When the police showed up, PKT was immediately shut down, despite being under capacity and doing everything perfectly correctly. Instead of arguing, brothers politely agreed with the police to shut down, and cleared the house in a safe and organized manner. Brothers asked the police what the problem was and what to do in the future to prevent it, and the only answer they got was that they needed to strengthen their relationship with Lydia, to which the police officers themselves conceded was a near suicidal task.
The next week, on Friday afternoon, Lydia called FSILG directly, and FSILG cancelled PKTs party for that night, completely preemptively. Despite registering the party and having a risk plan in place, as well as a history of throwing safe events, FSILG cancelled our event completely because of the accusations from one borderline-insane neighbor.
At the moment, the social future of PKT looks grim. How can one misguided neighbor wield so much power over such a great house? It's time we bring Lydia's reign to an end. Friends of PKT must join forces to bring awareness of this tyranny. Only together can we defeat Lydia, and bring PKT back to its glory days.
By signing this petition, you are vowing your alliance with the house, and promise to help PKT ward off the evil forces which have insidiously swept in. Let's show the world that our voices WILL be heard!
