Why this petition matters

Started by Sina

On April 5th, 2022 at approximately 7:30 A.M. a tragic accident occurred in Richmond Hill involving a Great Bernese named Mia and a Shih-poo named Oban.

While Oban was being walked right outside of his house, Mia was also being walked when the two families crossed paths. Suddenly, and unprovoked, Mia viciously attacked Oban to the point that it nearly ended his life. Oban was rushed to a 24-hour emergency animal hospital where he underwent immediate surgery that lasted 3.5 hours and had to spend further time in the ICU. The medical bill was almost $15,000.00.

Mia is owned by Ryan Lomberg, who is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger currently playing for the Florida Panthers of the NHL. At the time of the incident Mia was being dogsat by Ryan's Parents, Lori and Trevor Lomberg.

Two months have passed since the incident and neither Mr. Lomberg nor his family have taken any responsibility for the matter or to cover the cost that Mr. Lomberg's dog Mia has caused.

Police have been contacted but that will not accomplish the task at hand, and that is not about putting Mia down. In fact, we are absolutely against the death penalty. This is about providing financial relief for something that should not have ever happened to begin with.

The purpose of this petition is to have Mr. Lomberg cover the cost that he is ultimately responsible for. The hopes are, in the worst case, to have enough petitioners here to provide to the small claims court in support of the claim to have Mr. Lomberg held responsible for the medical bill. In the best case we hope that he himself will feel compelled to pay the bill as a good and responsible dog owner.

For responsible dog owners our dogs are like our children. We feed them, clean them, pick up after them and dote upon them. We are proud when they behave and we scold them when they don't. We apologize to those that they have inconvenienced because we taught our dogs better. In the end we take responsibility for how they act towards other people and their dogs and we can only hope that other dog owners will take the same ownership - if they don't then they should not be dog owners at all. If people aren't held responsible for their dogs, especially when they commit vicious attacks, it will set a precedent.
