Why this petition matters

This is a petition to raise more awareness on the indigenous Nange Yeti Nimonca's murder. Amazon frontliners and several organizations are demanding justice because there has been no suspects investigated and leaves Nange's family with NO ANSWERS.

In December 19, 2021, Nange Yeti Nimonca, a grandfather and Pikenani —sage— of the Waorani nationality , disappeared while on patrol in the community of Wawampare in the Amazonian province of Pastaza, near the Curaray River. His lifeless body was found two days later, on December 21, with several forceful blows to his skull and cuts to his neck.

Nange's daughter, Rosalina Yeti Orengo, reported the alleged murder to the Puyo Indigenous Affairs Prosecutor's Office. She also denounced alleged threats that her father Nange Yeti and his family had received, due to his role as a defender of nature. Yeti's murder was the second violent crime against a nature defender in 2021 in Ecuador.

In March of that year , Andrés Durazno , defender of water and spokesman for the anti-mining resistance in Río Blanco and Molleturo, was also assassinated. Three months after his death, several Waorani organizations denounce delays and irregularities in the investigation of his death.

How has the case progressed? Despite the fact that the complaint for the murder of Nange Yeti was filed on December 30, the Prosecutor's Office took three months to carry out the investigation procedures such as taking versions and exhuming the body. The proceedings were only carried out on March 21 and 22, 2022. In addition, the costs of procedures such as the exhumation of Yeti's body had to be borne by the Waorani Organization of Pastaza (OWAP). According to organizations such as OWAP and the Waorani Nationality of Ecuador (NAWE), during the proceedings, the prosecutor in charge of the case and the investigating agent of the National Police had a "disinterested" attitude. The organizations denounced this attitude and on March 24, the district attorney for indigenous affairs in Puyo, Irar Amílcar Antún Tsamaraint, was dismissed . The Specialized Chamber for Family, Childhood and Adolescence of the National Court of Justice declared that prosecutor Antún had been negligent for "having delayed the proceedings he was in charge of." NAWE and OWAP welcomed the dismissal of the prosecutor. However, they assured that this decision was made very late. They also asked that the new prosecutor be an official who can " guarantee effective judicial protection , truth, justice, and reparation." Nange Yeti's family says that days before he was killed, his wife received threats.

So far, the Prosecutor's Office has not filed charges against any suspects.
